Native support for moon Remote Cache

Published: September 23, 2026

Moon is joining the BuildFetch Cache lineup with native Remote Cache support over the Bazel Remote Execution gRPC API (REAPI)!

Moon Remote Cache support is free for Open Source projects.

Moon is moonrepo's fast Rust-based build system and for polyglot monorepos.

Moon is widely adopted by industry leaders:

And now teams using Moon can use BuildFetch Cache as a shared Remote Cache across CI and developer machines.

Moon v2 supports Remote Caching through the Bazel REAPI protocol, making it a very natural addition to BuildFetch.

See Configure Moon Remote Cache for the complete setup.

Technical Extravaganza

Moon is the fourth BuildFetch Cache client built on the Bazel REAPI gRPC protocol, after Bazel, Sbt, and Buck2.

We introduced native Moon client recognition via reapi/moon/<PROJECT_ID> with dedicated MOON_GRPC_* cache metrics while reusing the same BuildFetch Action Cache, CAS, and ByteStream implementation as our other REAPI clients.

Our end-to-end integration suite now runs real moon builds against BuildFetch Cache. Interestingly, moon is first build system which required temporary Git workspace with a deterministic first commit because moon resolves the current branch and revision during workspace setup.

The test then verifies that:

  • First Moon workspace misses cache, executes locally, and uploads the result
  • Second independent workspace hits BuildFetch Cache, restores the output, and skips local task execution

This ensures we keep long-term compatibility with Moon as BuildFetch Cache evolves.

Product Vision

Moon becomes the 12th native external integration publicly supported by BuildFetch Cache, joining Bazel, Gradle, Maven, Sbt, Buck2, Buildbarn, Ccache, Sccache, Go, Nx, and Turborepo.

This moves BuildFetch Cache further towards the goal of providing Startups and Enterprises with a Unified Cloud / On-Prem Remote Cache Platform across backend, frontend, mobile and AI/ML projects.
