Buildbarn Remote Execution + BuildFetch Cache
Published: September 17, 2026
Buildbarn Remote Bazel Execution joins first-class integration lineup! Your Buildbarn owns Execution, Cloud or On-Prem BuildFetch owns the Cache, unlocking native support for Remote Cache in over 10 other build systems for Backend, Frontend, Mobile and AI/ML projects for the entire Org.
Buildbarn Remote Cache support is free for Open Source projects.
Buildbarn is an established Open Source Bazel Remote Execution system, used by well-known industry leaders:
- Snowflake: runs its own Buildbarn Remote Execution cluster as unified remote execution for C++ and Java builds
- Booking.com: Buildbarn played key role in their path of modernizing 20-year-old Perl codebase
- Volvo Cars: uses Buildbarn for vehicle-software CI platform, processing more than 35,000 test and build jobs per day
- NetEase: its NeoX uses Remote Execution, and even open-sourced a Buildbarn-compatible Python worker for Windows and macOS!
- Glean: uses GCP Kubernetes spot workers for their Buildbarn cluster
See Configure Buildbarn Remote Execution with BuildFetch Cache for the full setup.
Technical Extravaganza
As you might have noticed, we can't ship anything without mentioning automatic end-to-end tests. It's true, we wouldn't be able to sleep well if we didn't have probably one of the largest Remote Cache integration test suites in the world!
Buildbarn is no exception, in fact it is one of the most complicated tests we have: we deploy BuildFetch Cache and then Buildbarn configured to use BuildFetch Cache as its Remote Cache.
Then the test scenario runs Bazel builds configured with both --remote_cache and --remote_executor and verifies observed BuildFetch Cache requests from both Bazel and Buildbarn and the build outcomes.
Test suite represents a compatibility Matrix of different Bazel and Buildbarn versions ensuring continuous compatibility with BuildFetch monorepo as it evolves.
Product Vision
We believe quality infrastructure software is interoperable. This is our current take on Bazel Remote Execution and Remote Cache puzzle for our big customers already critically dependent on Buildbarn. It is a long term commitment, we will support this as long as it is technically reasonable.
Teams should not throw away expensive engineering investments like Buildbarn while moving Remote Cache to BuildFetch to benefit from extremely fast RAM + NVMe + SSD storage, observability, Cloud regions or On-prem performance and native support for over 10 other build systems.
